What O-ring size fits a five-inch Senko-style worm?
A quarter inch inside diameter, or 7mm. Two vendors that size rings by bait length both land there. The 3/8 inch you will see recommended is the size for a six inch bait.
Why you will see three different answers
Ask this in a forum and you get 1/4 inch, 7mm, and 3/8 inch, which spans a 50 percent difference in diameter. None of the answers explains itself.
Two vendors who size rings by bait length agree with each other and settle it. The O-Ring Store sells kits matched to bait: their Senko 5 kit is 1/4 inch inside diameter and their Senko 6 kit steps up to 5/16 inch. VMC’s crossover rings run 8mm for a six inch worm and 7mm for a five inch worm, dropping to 5mm for a trick worm and 3mm for finesse drop shot baits.
A quarter inch is 6.35mm. VMC says 7mm. Those two are close enough to be the same answer, and both come from someone whose business depends on the ring fitting.
The 3/8 inch answers are 9.5mm, which is the six inch bait’s size. That looks like sizing for a larger worm carried across to a smaller one, and a ring that loose slides.

Buy 1/4 inch or 7mm for a five inch bait. Either works; they are a fraction of a millimetre apart.
How to know the fit is right
The ring has to stretch to go on. That stretch is the whole mechanism: tension against the bait is what holds it in place while a fish pulls.
- Correct: you need a tool or a firm roll to get it on, and it stays where you put it when you push it with a thumbnail.
- Too large: it slides along the bait under light pressure, or falls off during a cast. Go down a size.
- Too small: it cuts into the plastic and tears through after a fish or two. Go up.
A ring that fits sits in a slight groove of its own making without splitting the bait.
Why bother
The ring is the whole point of wacky rigging. The hook goes through the ring rather than the plastic, so the bait never gets pierced and never tears at the hook hole. That turns a bait you lose in two fish into one that lasts. The tradeoff and the alternatives are a separate question.
What we do not know
Neither vendor publishes the cross-section thickness alongside the inside diameter, and thickness changes how much a ring grips at the same diameter. We have not measured rings, baits, or how many fish a correctly sized ring survives, because we run no physical tests. Stick baits from different makers also vary in diameter at five inches, so treat this as the size to buy first rather than a specification for every bait on the shelf.
Do this next
Buy 1/4 inch or 7mm. If your bait is a thicker brand and the ring will not stretch on without tearing, step up one size and stop there.
