What is the one Senko-style setup a beginner should use from shore?
As an editorial starting point, use a five-inch green pumpkin stick bait, Texas rigged weightless on a 4/0 extra wide gap hook, with a seven-foot medium spinning rod, ten pound braid, and an eight to twelve pound fluorocarbon leader.

Should I use a Texas rig or wacky rig from a pond bank?
Start Texas rigged. From a bank you are casting blind into grass, wood, and rock, and a Texas rig comes through all of it. Switch to wacky once you have found clean bottom and the bites have stopped.

What hook size fits a five-inch stick bait?
Start with a 4/0 extra wide gap hook for a Texas-rigged five-inch stick bait. Check that the bait sits straight and can move clear of the point. Treat this as a starting size.

Should a beginner fish a Senko weightless or add a bullet weight?
Start weightless when you can cast to the target and follow the fall. Add a bullet weight when wind, depth, current or cover prevents that. Use the lightest weight that gives you useful control.

How do I rig a soft plastic weedless without ruining its action?
Run the point in at the nose, out a short way down, slide the bait up the shank, then bury the point back in so the bait hangs dead straight. A bend makes the bait spin on the retrieve.

How slowly should I fish a weightless stick bait?
Slower than feels reasonable. Cast, let it fall on slack line for a ten count, lift the rod tip once, let it fall again. The fall gets the bite, so most of your retrieve is waiting.

Where should I cast when fishing from a featureless pond bank?
Parallel to the bank. A cast straight out crosses the strike zone once; a parallel cast stays in it the whole retrieve. Then find the one thing on that shoreline that is different and fish it from three angles.

What does a bass bite feel or look like on slack line?
You see it before you feel it. The line jumps, ticks sideways, or starts moving off on its own. A bite also shows up as your line going slack early, when the bait should still be falling.

When and how hard should I set the hook?
Reel down until the line comes tight, then sweep the rod to the side and keep pulling. On braid, a hard snap into slack line pops the fish's mouth open instead of driving the hook home.

How do I stop a soft plastic from sliding down the hook or tearing?
Stop the bait from moving in the first place. Use a hook with a bait keeper, or hook through a small O-ring around the bait rather than through the plastic. Sliding causes the tearing, not the fish.

What O-ring size fits a five-inch Senko-style worm?
7mm, or a quarter inch at the nearest fractional size. Two retailers who map ring size to bait length both put a five inch Senko at 7mm. The 3/8 inch you will also see is larger than either sells.

Are O-rings, crossed O-rings, tubing, or bait keepers better?
Bait keeper hooks for Texas rigs. For wacky, a crossover ring rigs both wacky and Neko from one ring, which a plain O-ring cannot. Only ever wacky rig? A plain ring costs far less and loses nothing.
